    "Cuts clear Mariners' first-base picture"

an article describing the M's platoon at first base this season is shaping up to include Russell Brynan and Mike Sweeny. The article goes on to say that the second round of cuts includes two first baseman Brian LaHair and Mike Carp and does not include a single word about a Chris Shelton

    C Shelton: .605 .871 .516

for the record the stat line reads OBP, SLG and then AVG but does it really matter at this point? they are all over .500 and that with 38 cactus league AB's. 38 is not a large sample size but its in the top third of every invitee. Actually let me put it another way, in sortable stats, he is outside the top ten in AB's but inside the top ten in every other category including leading the team in BB, Third in Home Runs, Total Bases and RBI's with only two strikeouts!!

    CHRIS SHELTON FOR M'S 1B IN 09!!!

    a look back
I spent alot of the day running errands and promoting but the real awesome thing about today is that THE SEATTLE MARINERS PLAYED A GAME OF BASEBALL!!! And lost but thats ok, I'm not worried about a spring training loss in extra innings to the Padres. What I did want to do it re-post and revisit a post I made in spring training last year(which I stole from the Mariner blog admittedly then and again now)

22 Things I believe about this trade

    1. Erik Bedard is awesome - one of the five best pitchers in the American League.- How the hell would you be able to tell?

    2. Erik Bedard and Felix Hernandez are both candidates for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award.- And they were untill they both got injured(Felix still managed to lead the tem in strikeouts and ERA

    3. Two great pitchers and mediocre everything else is not a formula for consistent success.- True than and True now

    4. The Mariners are going to miss Adam Jones. Badly.- Here is where this post has always been interesting, and I still believe time will tell but the dude played all year, only hit .270, knocked in less than 60 runs and only had 9 homeruns in FUCKING CAMDEN YARD! he may go on to be a hall of famer but I would still trade him for 120 innings of pretty damn good left handed starting pitching

    5. The Mariners right fielder in 2008 is going to suck.- Lol at Wilkerson

    6. The Mariners outfield defense is going to suck.- Lol at Mike Morse

    7. In 2009, we’re going to be hunting for two new corner outfielders.- Sup Chavez, Sup Guiterrez

    8. The Angels are still the most likely team in baseball to win their division.- And they did, by alot

    9. The Mariners improved themselves by, at most, 2-3 wins in 2008 with this deal.- Actually they were about -20 wins but again my point is time will tell... I know he is a Dick but he didnt try to injure his shoulder

    10. If Erik Bedard isn’t healthy all year, we’ll be analyzing the new GM in 10 months.- Bill Bavasi. PEACE THE FUCK OUT!!

    11. The Mariners wouldn’t have made this trade if they understood how to value defense.- Sup Jack Z. were all awaiting Reggie Coronas spring training numbers

    12. I will run out of analogies for this trade before spring training starts.- No comment

    13. The total amount of talent given up will rival only the Bartolo Colon trade of 2002.- Meh, Sherill was awesome last year but he also spent some time on the DL and the Mariners still have a few guys who can pitch lft handed set up even with Fierabend out for the year, hell even Washburn might end up in that role who knows, so what if he is making 14 mil.

    14. The biggest loser in this deal will be Jarrod Washburn.- OH SNAP!!

    15. This trade cements the fact that Brandon Morrow will never start a game for the M’s.- Just not true sir, %100 not true.

    16. The idea that the M’s valued Morrow over Jones is so ridiculous, I can’t even fathom it.- 9 jacks in Camden, thats all I'm saying

    17. The Mariners are now paying Horacio $2.75 million to fight for the role of long reliever.- Who was ever not in favor of that, I mean seriously, in the pen or cut his ass(which they did) but why the hell not. If you have a contract you cant get rid of dont start someone just because hes making bank, if he is more useful as a relief pitcher then why the hell not?

    18. In July, the M’s will be talking about trading for a veteran reliever to improve the pen.- Again not true, we actually offloaded our pen to make room for some kids with some ok arms.

    19. Geoff Baker and I will never agree on any of this.- He writes for the PI, Who gives a shit

    20. Jeff Sullivan and I will agree on all of this.- Because he is awesome

    21. I won’t care much over losing Chris Tillman. I will care deeply over losing Carlos Triunfel.- Fuck Tillman, and what is the point of even mentioning Triunfel, I assure you he was never a serious part of this deal... and he actually hit a little last year in Cali.

    22. The M’s have, once again, taken a bad path to a good goal. It will, once again, not work.- Aaaaaaaaand it didnt but I still think Bedard can be valuable and if a few things fall into place we are not that far away from competing, not this year of course but you know. Bedard can still be a part of a good Mariners team and the A's and Angels absolutely not get better in the offseason.

reasons to watch the mariners the remainder of the season

    Take one drink each time:
    - Yuni throws the ball away
    - A pitcher leaves the game because of an “injury” that is probably just a raging case of suck
    - Lopez doesn’t quite reach a ground ball
    - Yuni hits into a double play
    - Beltre looks silly swinging at a low-and-outside pitch
    - Riggleman makes an inexplicable PH or PR sub
    - Cairo does that weird squint thing
    - Beltre does his funny happy feet dance
    - Raul makes a sliding almost-catch that makes him look like a better fielder than he is
    - Drink for every runner the Mariners leave on base.
    - An announcer says something about “establishing the fastball” or “keeping it down in the zone.”
    - Whenever anyone mentions “1995,” “2001,” or any Mariner who hasn’t been on the roster in at least 10 years

And, if you want to commit suicide:
    - Drink each time anybody says “no doubt about it”

    Mariners
Man, RA Dickey has some nasty stuff. I would love to see him in the rotation and Batista closing games until JJ gets off the DL. OK here is the problem, line on Washburn tonight 6IP 3R all earned 6H 0BB 6SO. All in all a fantastic start from your #4 guy. With the bullpen in as much dissaray as it is now giving up two runs in three innings is all you can ask from them. The problem I mentioned earlier is that I dont know how many games the hometown 9 are going to win when we give up 5+ runs. Our offense this year is not only going to underachive but be inconsistant. Our bullpen situation needs to get figured out and soon. Our rotation even with Bedard getting his starts getting scratched should allow the M's to win alot of games but only if the pen can work up to the standards of last year. This is not asking alot, our pen should(if healthy) be better than last year and I'm torn to piesces about Eric O'Flaherty. 7-1 last season in 70 inings with an ERA under 4 and this year he cant even get lefties out. That and his theme music was Dropkick Murphy's and I was really looking forward to hearing it all year. Everything seemed to be gone tonight, our patience at the plate, our good contact, our clutch and even our middle infield defense seemed sucky. I dont know what the solution is but if our pen and our offense and our outfield defense is going to be this bad then someone needs to figure out something. Does anyone have any opinion on our minor league or free agent offense?

    Dear Jon Mclahren,

Please stop sending Wilkerson. I am tired of watching his little hooves clipity clop down to secons base. At least teach him to slide, a skill I'm sure he has never learned due to the fact he has been a liability on the base path his entire career.

    Love,
    Bo

    Bedard
Well its done. Adam Jones, George Sherill, Chris Tillman, Tony Butler and Kam Mickolio are now Baltimore Oriels and Eric Bedard is a Seattle Mariner. Since everything to be said about this trade as already been discussed at length and I am surprisingly impartial this is from two weeks or so ago from Captain Dave at www.ussmariner.com.

22 Things I believe about this trade

    1. Erik Bedard is awesome - one of the five best pitchers in the American League.

    2. Erik Bedard and Felix Hernandez are both candidates for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award.

    9. The Mariners improved themselves by, at most, 2-3 wins in 2008 with this deal.

    10. If Erik Bedard isn’t healthy all year, we’ll be analyzing the new GM in 10 months.

    11. The Mariners wouldn’t have made this trade if they understood how to value defense.

    12. I will run out of analogies for this trade before spring training starts.

    13. The total amount of talent given up will rival only the Bartolo Colon trade of 2002.

    14. The biggest loser in this deal will be Jarrod Washburn.

    15. This trade cements the fact that Brandon Morrow will never start a game for the M’s.

Hi, I'm Bo and I am growing out a beard even though I promised my girlfriend I'd shave. GO MARINERS!

Interesting note: Some experts say the first playoff beards were grown by Harvey’s Wallbangers – the 1982 American League champion Milwaukee Brewers. But other historians have argued that the original playoff beard was sported by none other than our nation’s 16th president, Abraham Lincoln (pictured) who began growing his rally whiskers in April of 1860 when the Civil War began and didn’t shave it until the Civil War ended with his North squad coming out on top in April of 1865.
